Canada's housing obsession feeding into productivity slump, report says

Canada’s poor productivity is the result of a lack of investment in business and technology while investment in housing has soared, says a new report from the Fraser Institute. The think tank’s report, which compares investment in Canada and the United States, found that over the past two decades capital investment in Canada was greater than in the U.S. “relative to the size of the economy.”

Is a land value tax the solution to Canada's housing crisis?

Canada's housing crisis is a complex issue, but Redfin’s chief economist believes there's a clear solution: a land value tax (LVT). Median home prices in Canadian metropolitan areas have hit $788,000 and skyrocketed to $1.17 million in Toronto, putting homeownership out of reach for many Canadians and straining renters' budgets, according to Daryl Fairweather.

Canadians’ top neighbourhoods for quality of life and liveability: Re/Max 

Canadians are highly satisfied with their neighbourhoods, with 86 per cent expressing satisfaction with their quality of life and liveability, and 50 per cent liking it a lot, Re/Max’s 2024 Liveability Report found. Prairie province cities, like those in Alberta and Manitoba, lead the list with some of the most liveable neighbourhoods in Canada. Their relative affordability, combined with access to amenities like green spaces, restaurants, schools, health services and cultural spaces, boost their liveability rankings.
