Experts who spoke to Global News say that while some homebuyers are likely to see their borrowing power increase because of the new regime, the overall impact on housing affordability is likely to be limited.

How to help first-time buyers get a footing on the property ladder

In the first year of the pandemic, the number of first-time homebuyers in Vancouver increased by 51 per cent over a two-year period, driven by the ultra low interest rate. There were 1,530 first-time purchasers in 2018 and by the end of 2020, there were 2,315, according to Canadian Housing Statistics Program data analyzed by Prof. Andy Yan, director of Simon Fraser University’s City Program.
