The worst of a historic home affordability crisis may be behind us

Finally some good news on the home affordability front. According to the Royal Bank of Canada‘s measure, it took 59.5 per cent of the median household income to own a home in this country in the second quarter. And while that might sound like a lot, it’s down from 63.7 per cent at the end of 2023.

Canada’s condo supply is surging — and it’s not just in Toronto

Hopeful Canadian homebuyers may well have their pick of the litter when it comes to condos in many housing markets across the country, a new report from Re/Max Canada shows. The national brokerage said in its national condo outlook released Wednesday that listings in this segment of the market have “soared” in recent months.

New listings continued to climb in nearly all of Canada’s major real estate markets this September, except for Montreal, according to a recent report from Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). This influx of inventory has helped relieve some of the pressure on supply, but buyer activity remains relatively sluggish. This dynamic left many markets in a state of pause as high interest rates weigh on affordability, said RBC economist Rachel Battaglia.
