In British Columbia, parents are forking out $204,000 on average so their kids can buy a home

Parents giving money to their kids to buy a home took off during the pandemic when real estate went through the roof. But has today’s cooler housing market changed that? Not really, says a new study by CIBC Capital Markets economists Benjamin Tal and Katherine Judge. Since 2015, the share of first-time homebuyers who received financial help from family members rose from 20 per cent to 31 per cent, and though that trend has levelled off in recent years, it has not declined.

Canada's Population Could Hit 63M in 50 Years; Where Will Everyone Live?

If you think cities like Toronto are crowded now, wait until 2073. By then, Canada’s population could skyrocket to 63 million, according to medium-growth projections from Statistics Canada (StatCan) that were released on Monday. Currently, the country’s population sits at 40.1 million (2023), says Canada’s national statistical agency. The report opens by highlighting a few dramatic realities.

Is Canada's housing market about to roar back into life?

The last month of housing market activity before the Bank of Canada’s interest rate cut at the beginning of June saw sales remain muted, with homebuying sluggish in May. Recently released Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) figures showed national home sales posted a marginal 0.6% climb in May over the previous month, with actual activity down 5.9% year over year and the MLS Home Price Index (HPI) dipping by 2.4%.
