Canadian cities need to relax their zoning policies if they want to tap into billions in federal funds available for new home construction. That was one of the messages delivered by Sean Fraser, the federal minister of housing, to a lunchtime audience at the Empire Club of Canada in Toronto on Jan. 17. 2024 homeownership surge with nearly one in five Canadians eager to buy, especially younger groups: Wahi

2024 might just be the year that many Canadians buy a home — nearly one in five to be precise — as a recent survey on Canadians’ homebuying plans from Wahi finds.

The survey also notes that those under 35 have the strongest intentions and that many plan to sacrifice things in their lives to make their homeownership dream happen. For example, this could mean spending less money, working more hours or starting a gig on the side of their day job.

Housing minister warns against resistance to ending exclusionary zoning

Canada's Housing Minister is warning that municipalities won't succeed with applications for federal housing accelerator funding unless they are flexible on zoning rules.

Speaking Wednesday at an Empire Club of Canada luncheon in Toronto, Sean Fraser said a willingness to adopt zoning reforms has been key for the communities that have signed deals with Ottawa.
