Canada's national housing strategy remains 'under construction'

Priced-out first-time homebuyers were hoping the government’s national housing strategy would construct a lot of homes. But so far, it’s mainly constructed a lot of press releases. Housing starts have floundered, having trended significantly lower since mid-2021. “In fact, if we strip out rentals, the trend in ‘homeowner’ housing starts is running at the lowest levels since the (2008) financial crisis,” noted Edge Realty Analytics housing analyst Ben Rabidoux in a report Wednesday.
