Why a conversation on the fees municipalities add to new homes is necessary now more than ever

In recent weeks, there have been significant discussions about development charges (DCs) in municipalities across the GTA — but specifically in the City of Toronto. Government taxes, fees and charges, like DCs, have contributed to a “cost to build” crisis that has undermined the financial viability of new home construction, is stalling residential development and threatening future housing supply across the metropolitan area. 

Mortgage borrowers renewing in 2025 to face an average $513 monthly payment increase: RBC

Despite the recent decline in interest rates, Canada’s largest bank says its clients will face substantial mortgage payment increases over the coming years. In total, RBC will see $353 billion worth of mortgages renew from 2025 to 2027, the majority of which are fixed rate borrowers who secured low rates during the pandemic. Many of these clients will be renewing into significantly higher rates at renewal time.

Real estate’s season finale may see a plot twist

The real estate market traditionally tapers off in December, but the transition may be more quirky than smooth this year: rules that aim to lower the financial hurdles for buyers who want to purchase a home in the $1-million to $1.5-million range are set to take effect this month.
